More tornadoes were spotted in January, 1999 than any other January on record, with an unofficial count of 161. The preious record for a January was in 1975 with 52. January 21, 1999 also set a record when 87 tornadoes were reported, the most for any day in January.

A study by Columbus, OH-based Safeware Insurance found that more than 1.5 million computers were stolen, damaged or otherwise destroyed in 1998. Reported accidents to notebook PCs dominate the losses at 49%. More than a quarter of all reported notebook losses were due to theft, a decrease of 11% over the previous year.
